An open letter to Luke & Jake

To Luke Joekel and Jake Matthews:

Congratulations on all you have accomplished at Aggieland to this point in your careers.  Our victory this weekend has a lot to do with how you were able to hold back the biggest, baddest defense in the nation and give our man Johnny time to work his magic.  You are the unsung (well, not really) heroes of the Aggie resurgence and I am very thankful to you for that.

I'm sure you've heard, the NFL wants you this year.  Apparently Jockel, you could get drafted #5 or even higher, and Jake in the late first round (wouldn't it be cool to play in Houston like your dad?).  This is impressive for offensive tackles, especially two from the same team, to be considered.  It'd be the first time two offensive linemen would be drafted in the first round in almost 20 years, and you are both Juniors?

So, trust me if I understand if you take the money.  You have a big opportunity ahead.  I've watched The Blind Side... I know how valued your talents are.

But think about this.  You guys are both eligible to come back to Aggieland next year and make history.  This dude, Johnny Football, that we keep talking about... is a Fish, and he's only going to get better, and smarter with more time in the film room, the practice field, and a bowl game ahead... perhaps a BCS game now.  Mike Evans, Ben Malena, Trey Williams... all coming back?  Think about what next year may mean?

This is a team that wasn't supposed to compete, was supposed to get rolled over by every good SEC West team out there, and was 2 years away from being able to stand in the SEC West?

And now, we beat Alabama... the best team in the Nation... on their field.  And if we had a playoff, Alabama could prove that a one loss SEC team could beat any of these minor league champions that are being talked about today.  I hope they get the chance to win #7... or Georgia shows up and does.  It'd be a shame that the SEC, the best football conference period, gets shut out of the mythical BCS championship on a technicality.

You know, you could go get the money this year, but that'll be there waiting.  The NFL isn't going anywhere. However, considering where we are as a program, if you return for your Senior seasons, you could get what no Aggie football player has had since 1939.

A National Championship!

And I am not looking through maroon colored glasses.  I saw the LSU and the Bama game.  You are that good.

While I know there are no guarantees (just ask Bama and LSU) and you have to fight for it, I hope that you decide to come back and finish what you started.  If you do and the Aggies are hosting that trophy next year, you'll not only be looked at as great offensive linemen that have great NFL careers, you will be all that and more...

You will be legends.

Just ask that Cam Newton dude from Auburn.

Just think about it.  That ring would look really good on y'all.

Sincerely,

A faithful Fighting Texas Aggie.
