Johnny, please focus on football

I opened up Texags.com the other day to see the article newsfeed blow up once again with news about Aggie football, and our beloved Johnny Football.

I kind of wish it was about his game.

Instead, it was another off the field piece of drama.  Thank you Twitter.

Like most of us that hit the "send" button on something that we didn't use our brain to write... at 1:38am on a Sunday morning/Saturday night... (do recall that Manziel is 19... and with that comes all of the immaturity that comes with being that age, and perhaps some more), he immediately deleted the tweet and retracted it.  However, the news media (some of whom want to see him, and A&M, fall) picked up on it soon enough and it made national news.  Yes - I read about it on ESPN.com.

Blow up the drama.  College Station is a fishbowl.  Manziel parties too much.  He's going to leave for the NFL at the first chance he gets!  Now the news media goes back and recalls an incident where Manziel, before he became "Johnny Football" was arrested before last season for getting in a bar fight and carrying a fake ID... close to transferring, etc.

Oh yeah... and the drama explodes ten-fold on the Texags.com message board (always good for some entertainment).

Relax... an article came out that explains that the infamous text was about someone from the College Station PD putting a parking ticket on Manziel's Benz.

Serously?  Wah.

All of us that went to A&M for four years, and weren't national celebrities sitting courtside at high profile NBA games and winning Heisman trophies as freshman, know that CSPD are a bunch of ticketing nazis... and don't even mention the Petty Thieving Ticketing Service (PTTS - nobody knows what it really stands for) at A&M.  It's a fact of college life for an Aggie... if you go through four  or five years without getting a parking ticket (or ten) it means you either didn't own a car or we would question your credentials as a Fighting Texas Aggie.  Its as much of a rite of passage as dunking your ring.

I totally understand that this level of fame is something that takes some time to get used to.  Two years ago, he could have tweeted that nonsense and no one would have cared.  Now he has 370,000 followers and everyone pays attention to what he says, does, and where he hangs out.  Yeah, he's the Heisman trophy winner, has become "larger than life," but some of this is his own doing.  You didn't see Tim Tebow lashing out and creating headlines about his lifestyle, did you?  You saw the media bashing him because he was "square" and loves Jesus.  I admire Tim for this (still do)... what Johnny is doing is foolish.

Or... AJ Mccarran.  Remember him?  He's coming to College Station in September and wants revenge for some little football game we won up in Alabama last year.  The only headlines he's made is some crap about what Brett Musberger said about his girlfriend being beautiful at the National Championship Game (and he only was in the headlines because he was dating Miss Alabama... you can do that when you are the QB for the Tide).  He's probably doing what you should be... focusing on your game and preparing to win a BCS Title.

Oh, by the way... of the two QBs I mentioned.  They have something that I'm sure Johnny (and every Aggie) wants.  A National Championship.  Actually, they have two each.  AJ wants three.

So Johnny, if you want one yourself... and believe me there are THOUSANDS of Aggies (including me) that want you to give us that first title since 1939... then take a page from their book, lay low, and focus on kicking butt on the football field (we know you can do that... duh!).  Because as talented as you are and as much as you can (and I'm sure will) take your game to the next level; all of these distractions can just as easily jump up and bite you... and take your game down with it.  Then, where does this idea of leaving for the NFL next year go?  Nowhere... potentially.  On top of that, the NFL places a pretty huge premium on character and I guarantee that this nonsense will be looked at closely.  Just ask that linebacker from Notre Dame that you beat out for the Heisman... that fake girlfriend incident cost him a lot in signing value.

So do yourself, and us your fans, a favor... and chill.

Well, not when you're holding that bean shaped ball, because you do some pretty wicked stuff when you have that thing in your hands.  And we really want to see you school Alabama again.

That won't be easy, by the way.  In case you haven't heard, they're pretty darned good.

So you have a Heisman trophy, that's awesome... but...

There's another trophy that we want to see you holding up in late January; please don't mess that up by being an fool.

Sincerely,

One of your fans.
